Theater preview: Playhouse musical 'Wakes'
Tough gig, sleep for 900 years. Almost as impressive as can crawl out of bed. (And do not even think about picking up the snooze button 50.)
This is the scenario faced by the heroine of "Sleeping Beauty Wakes," the musical based on the fable that hits the La Jolla Playhouse this week.
The show, a co-production with the McCarter Theatre Center of New Jersey, a beauty - that lazy fairy tale fame - heading to modern clinical disorders of sleep, where his father hopes doctors can do something for the poor girls slumber epic.

It works. (See the title of the piece.) But now beauty is facing the 21st century technology and the population of clinic insomniacs jealous (which bear the names of characters such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea). Pros: musical numbers!
The latter come courtesy of Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda, the husband and wife songwriters and musicians who make up two-thirds of the pop act Groovelily.
San Diegans have seen these before: in 2003 with the show holiday fable of the same mind "Strike 12" (based on "The Little Match Girl") at the Old Globe Theatre, and with the musical romance "Long short story "San Diego Rep in 2009.
For "Beauty", they team up with the book writer Rachel Sheinkin, their "strike of 12" partner who went to Tony Award glory with "The Bee Putnam County Spelling 25th Annual Meeting." Rebecca Taichman directs with Doug Varone as a choreographer.
And step by step in beauty as herself, the San Diego race Aspen Vincent, a graduate of Santa Fe Christian School who came by Christian Youth Theatre of North County and made his first splash with professional Starlight Musical Theatre in Balboa Park.
