HIV/AIDS 'Treatment as Prevention' a Top Priority
A senior expert with AIDS said that the best way to control the epidemic is to use antiretroviral drugs as a prevention tool. "Treatment as prevention" strategy will be highlighted at the AIDS conference next week in Rome.
Dr. Julio Montaner says the strategy "has progressed to a testable hypothesis to a priority urgent implementation."
"We originally came with the recommendation that prevention treatment back in 2006. We thought then that the data were compelling enough to make this recommendation, "he said.
It was a policy put in place in Vancouver, Canada, which directs the Center Montaner BC for Excellence in HIV / AIDS.
"Many people felt that more evidence was needed, and opponents have expressed reservations and so on and so on. We felt at the time that the treatment could prevent more than 90 percent of the transmission HIV we see in the world. Recent studies have supported his views. For example, two studies in Kenya, Uganda and Botswana show that a single tablet containing both drugs, taken daily, can prevent a person not infected with HIV transmission. This is called pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, and has a coverage rate higher than 73 percent.
Another study shows that when people get infected in the early treatment and staying on it, they are much less likely to infect another person during sex. Montaner said the results of a long-term study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health showed a protection rate of 96 percent. These results will be officially released in Rome.
