West Palm library draws kids with interactive exhibits
&Mdash; In an age when children prefer playing video games than read books, one in West Palm Beach library program summer youth are reminded that reading is fun and rewarding.The library has recently launched Storyopolis, a summer program offers six weeks of daily activities for children of all ages.
For children of primary school-age, library officials have recreated the whole literary world. A week, children play in castles cut Harry Potter, or living in the land of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Volunteers dress up in costumes and children full, at least temporarily, forget video games.
"Find this book great for kids can be difficult," said Jennifer Rodrick, youth library services librarian.
But showing children in a three-dimensional way that books are more than words, children learn to appreciate a classic form of entertainment.
"Even if they are used for playing video games, they still benefit from being able to touch something tangible and to be rooted in a history," said Kathy Hage, a youth services librarian.
West Palm Beach won a $ 3,000 scholarship to pay for the program. The Association of children's librarians and book wholesalers IncTeams in place to give just one national subsidy a year, and West Palm Beach came out on top.
"It's very impressive to us," Rodrick said. "We are all faced with budget cuts, and that was more than our annual budget (for youth services)."
The library is also a volunteer with AmeriCorps to run a program for preschool children.
Sarah Clark has spent nearly a year to the library of West Palm Beach. During the summer, Clark is running a program on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10:30 called "tale of a family."
Clark chooses a different theme each week and reads to children.Then they participate, some with their parents, singing songs that involve the literary theme.
Clark said she was impressed at how much grant money the city received this year.

Day four was a Special Theme Day, during kids were encouraged to dress up in their favorite red, white and blue clothing. On Thursday afternoon, following a day of windsurfing and games, parents and families were welcome to the camp for Parent's Night.
It will include games, music and more. Activities will include a play kitchen to learn shapes and letters, baby sign language instruction, nursery rhyme fun, dress-up, musical instruments and a craft. Each participating child will receive a free book.
